Festivals, Uncategorized ROYAL EASTER SHOW 2007 10 May 2007

Went to the Royal Easter Show last month but didn’t get around to posting until now, mainly because I forgot πŸ˜› I had the photos but we had a negative experience there so I didn’t want to post immediately whilst I was still fuming. Ended up completely forgetting to write this post, but better late than never!

It was a really lovely sunny day, so it was perfect Easter Show weather since a lot of it is outdoors. Mum was particularly keen on the Fresh Food Dome, which offers a massive range of food and goodies. The animals were also the star attractions, since that was the original point of the Royal Easter Show many years ago.. there were lots of animal shoes and competitions, much to our amusement. There was even a Freak Show (okay, it wasn’t called that exactly but I can’t remember the name!) with a crazy lady wielding a blowtorch/cutter thing and doing scary stunts with it.. and some guy lifting weights or something with his eyelids *shudder*. I ran off, can’t stomach that kinda stuff πŸ˜‰

Oh and the bad experience? It was at Mudgeeraba Spices and Curry Blends. See, every stall gives out samples to try-before-you-buy, etc, and this stall was no different. Except for one MAJOR thing. The Indian woman only wanted to serve white Australians and not anyone else. Ughhh it makes me feel so dirty actually typing that out, but that’s what she was doing. When I asked “Oooh! Can I please try some/” and she stared at me and rudely said “NO. Stand aside” Was quite shocked, and she also did the same thing to Mum who was standing away from me (so she didn’t know we were related). At first, I thought she meant she had run out and so stood meekly aside looking at the jars on display. She then said “I’m talking to people. YOU’RE IN THE WAY. Go away.”

The stupid woman

I’m generally a pushover but when someone’s so obviously rude and wrong, I get mad. So I spat fire at her and was very close to leaping over the counter and hitting her with one of her big jars. HARD. But was proud that I maintained my poise and just looked down my nose and sneered at her the whole time. Of course, she was completely unrepentant of her bad behaviour.

In comparison, all the other stalls were perfectly polite, friendly and courteous. It’s appalling – is this the type of experience the Royal Easter Show wishes to impart to fellow Australians and visitors to the country? Her husband obviously knew she was wrong though, because he just looked on quietly and didn’t dare say a word. Good man.

The moral? NEVER buy anything from the “Mudgeeraba Spices and Curry Blends” company. It’s so ridiculous that an Indian woman would turn her back on her own race and ignore all Indians/Asians (my mind’s still boggling over that).. and even MORE ridiculous that I’ve never ever experienced any racism from regular Australians, and the only racist event I’ve ever witnessed is from an Indian. Good grief..

But that aside, pics of the otherwise lovely day!

ahh your pictures always make me so hungry. πŸ˜› i’m sorry to hear about your bad experience though. i’ve been in the states for four years now and i realize that some of the most racist people are asians themselves. :/ and i actually think this is worse in asia, maybe not so overtly but you definitely get better service in a lot of restaurants in singapore if you’re caucasian. :/

I’ve never experienced asians like that, so it was quite a bit of a shock! Chris is in SG now for this upcoming week so maybe he’ll have fab service, lol!!

I will stand there and I will not even get a look!! I could be carrying around 50 bags waving a $100 note and I still dont think she would have served me!
I cant believe she does ti to other people ooohhh Im thinking revenge next year!
yummm croissants

Whoaaaa I’m so weirded out that you experienced it too. Watch her closely next time, she’ll IGNORE all the asians and be sugarpie to the Aussies! I can’t believe someone would be so blatantly racist to their own people. At least I know it’s not that she just hates my face – hee!

yeah shes just a moron! Serisouly i rmemeber these old ladies just walked up and said ‘can I try this’ and she was all over them.

Thats it….she will feel my wrath!

Did you use like turbo-charged flash when you took the photo so that it blinded her. I’m totally imaging a Today Tonight-style moment where she tried to bat your camera away!

My mum had a jumper in the Show again this year – it’s now tradition that someone in our family stands next to it and poses as if its some sort of tourist monument πŸ™‚

Btw, how does crumpet toast work? is there like that brown backing on the back so that jam or whatever doesn’t slip through the holes of the crumpet, or is it really like bread? I’m perplexed

The crumpet looks kinda like bread on the outside, but it’s got that holey texture on the inside.. and it’s smaller than the size of normal bread. It’s YUM :)~

Oooh we were watching the horses, they were just gorgeous!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh haha I wasn’t really sure what you were talking about so I just tought “jumping horse”, haha!!!

informative

You really are good at informing us all of what you get up to. Your pictures are great and really tell your story well, keep it up.

As an Indian I’m ashamed to hear that someone could act that way. I’d have had a hard time biting my tongue – you did well!

The Turkish gozleme looks a bit like a paratha! I’ve never tried gozleme, but it looks like they use lots of the same fillings as Indians do in parathas. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it (as if I’ll ever find it here…).

I thought I was quite controlled, normally I would’ve gone completely bonkers, heh!

Ya gozleme is the Turkish version! And it’s got mince beef, capciscum, onion, spinach and such. Really yum :)~

You guys have cool stuff going out out there! Fudge bars and piggies! Funnnn! BTW…that stupid woman does look stupid. Hehe… πŸ˜›

hey beverly, i’ve been reading your journal for a while now! i’ve never commented before….but felt that i had to today. on behalf of all the INDIANS out there….i would like to humbly apologize to you for what that indian lady did to you and your mum….it was absolutly rude, hurtful and very uncalled for. due to this unfortunate event…i hope you and others wont judge all indians based on that lady or other nutcases like her. god created us all and we should respect eachother regardless of the colour of our skin. so once again….very sorry that you and ur mum had to go through that at the easter show. take care, shirin

Nah I def don’t assume all indians are lunatics, just her πŸ˜‰ One of my really good friends is indian and there’s a loooovely family at the takeaway store near where I live that are super nice.. so it’s obviously just that crazy lady. Haha!

That woman’s awful! Don’t worry because you’re not the only one. To be honest, I’ve encountered 2-3 racist incidents here. And they are mostly ASIANS! I seriously don’t get why these Asians are nice to the whites but act differently when it comes to us Asians. I mean the whites at least treat us with some respect. Those racist Asians whom I’ve came across are all rude when speaking to me. Bah, unbelievable!

And ooh, how white and beautiful are the duck and bird!

I’ve never really met a racist Aussie, I mean, Aussies are soooo lovely and always against racism! I personally would want to be nicer to my own race, so i think this lady was just crazy πŸ˜‰

Btw, those birds were MEGA sized, it was so weird, haha!

Wow…and Indian lady racist against her OWN people??? Craziness…doesn’t she know she’s losing business by being so ignorant? Lets hope Karma bites her in the butt BIG time.

I love the duckie! I wanna take it home! =D

Yeah, what a nutcase.. but I bet she loses a LOT of business that way. Or maybe she generally uses her husband so she can target the Aussie crowd? strange!

Ahahah I bet writing about that indian lady got you all fired up again aye?
Its sooo annoying, once i was in the ASIAN mart at market city (the one on ground floor) and this australian old lady walks up the aisle me and my friend were on, and FULLY screamed at us about how we should go back to our own country and that we were giving people SARS? And we’re like.. IF YOU DONT LIKE ASIANS DONT DO YOUR SHOPPING AT AN ASIAN MART!…. Bt we were in shock and ran off before we got angry. it was my first taste of racism in australia.

but yea.. its funny how you took a pic of her with her hand gestures. lol. she mustve been mad that you were snapping away.

i think.. those animals are alpacas?

Re: πŸ™‚

Phwoarrrr that lady your experienced must’ve been such a loon, but like you, I’d probably be too shocked and run away.. then kick myself later and wish I’d said/done something back πŸ˜›

Those animals were listed as llamas, I remember now! But think it’s the same as Alpacas?

You guys have cool stuff going out out there! Fudge bars and piggies! Funnnn! BTW…that stupid woman does look stupid. Hehe… πŸ˜›

What a horrible woman she is and how unbelievably rude! Sorry to hear that she ruined your otherwise good day out at the show. I stopped going to the RES after it moved to Homebush as it was too far away from where I lived (Randwick). Would really love to take Emily there one day. She’d really enjoy looking at the animals. She was next to me when I read this entry so she kept going “Chicks! Pigs! Duck! Rooster!” Hehehehe πŸ˜€

Oooo emily would LOVE it, my mum and I were saying it’ll be great for kids as they can see/experience/feel/hear the animals and it’s really good for them to learn about animals and such. You gotta bring her soon πŸ™‚

Hhehehe…when I was there ages ago, I never bothered looking at the animals. We were more interested in the show bags and other shows like the chopping show? Not sure what it’s called..heheehe…strange how I’ve changed since becoming a mother…everything for the girl!

Your day looks like our day at the Show, hee! I love the cheese sticks and got some of those sausages too, the honey macadamia ones were awesome! I didn’t get those ones though, got the Thai coconut instead, they were nice but not coconutty enough!

That woman though, UGH! I can’t believe the gall of her!

Ooh yeah, those gourmet flavoured sausages were so good. Wanted to buy a bunch but we weren’t going home straight after the show, so we couldn’t πŸ™

I’ve never experienced racism in all my years in AU.. it’s ironic that my first instance is with an Indian who’s practically/kinda the same race as me. Go figure.

Nudie juices are THE BEST and they’re really cute too! I love their smoothies and drinkable yoghurts.. mmmmmmm

That indian woman was horrible. She has to remember she is an Asian herself not like she is ‘white’…some people are just so ignorance.

She was a complete loon. Any regardless of race, you just CAN’T be rude to customers like that! πŸ™

They don’t look real do they?! They were the winning animals in the competition, it was like a beauty comp for animals πŸ˜‰

Oo do you get Nudie juices too? I thought they were really Australian!

Are you doing anything exciting for your BIRTHDAY? πŸ™‚

Nah, they’re not available here. I used to buy them when I was still in Australia πŸ™‚

OOOHHHHH DO NOT remind me of my birthday! I don’t really fancy the idea of getting older! (when you’re my age, you’ll understand hahaha!)

i believe the camel like creatures are alpacas.

sucks you had to be put through that with the woman, but unfortunately there’s always going to be a few racial bigots you can’t change…

I’ve encountered a few racist people.. “white” australians and all other kinds. It really is sad especially in educated people.

Oo I love vegechips πŸ™‚ And this is horrible, but I think I was primed after looking at all the food pics — over your duck picture I thought it said “Peking duck” instead of “Perfect looking duck”.. Lol πŸ˜›

This sounds bad but if a caucasian is racist to me I think I would just say “oh ok, they’re an evil racist” and it’s almost like you can understand. but when it’s someone who’s (kinda) your own race that’s like that, you go “WHAT??” it just doesn’t make sense :X

Hehehehhehehhehehe Poor duck! But yes, I wonder if the animals there were nervous cos the next building to them was cooked food πŸ˜‰

Looks so fun! I wanted to go, but no one was coming with me πŸ™

Those animals are either Alpacas or Lamas (I can never remember the difference). I was kicked by a Lama in the stomach once, was very unpleasant. But they look cool!

And those cakes are so gorgeous! Must have taken so long to do all the icing!!

I’m sorry you had such a bad experience, I’ve actually come across quite a few very racist Asians (and they’re only racist to Asians). They tend to be older people (between 45-60), which I find just that little bit disturbing considering they are generally first generation Australian-Asians! I don’t understand it either, but it’s prevalent. And I also sometimes find that Asians will discriminate between different countries of Asia (eg some Japanese people are really racist to Chinese people etc). It’s sad.

That is so WEIRD. I mean, logically you’d think ppl would be nice to their..erm.. ‘own’ people? So disturbing and completely ridiculous. None of the nice Aussies around bought from her anyways, which is stupid of her as i’m the sort that will spend TONS if someone’s nice to me πŸ˜›

Llamas! That’s what they’re called… they look so strange it made me laugh πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

Wow…and Indian lady racist against her OWN people??? Craziness…doesn’t she know she’s losing business by being so ignorant? Lets hope Karma bites her in the butt BIG time.

Yikes! That Indian woman is ridiculous! I suggest you to write to Royal Easter Show to condemn her in the future events!

I did and got an apology from them but not from the woman directly :X I don’t think she sees herself as in the wrong!

That happens. There are people who behaved in an odd way to me here too and ironically, they are not British! Indians, West Indians and some other Europeans. They are not blatantly racist because it is illegal here.

I resisted and didn’t buy any showbags πŸ˜‰ Just as well, there’s so much candy in them it’s bbbaaad for the teeth!

teehee! so hard to resist them!! i totally ♥ the Perth Royal Show when i was in perthie. bought like EIGHT showbags in my 1st year! :P~
