FOOD, Living in... Singapore, Uncategorized ECONOMICAL RICE 11 March 2007

Had a simple lunch the day before the wedding.. of Economical Rice. I’ve only really recently discovered the delights of Economical Rice – it’s basically somewhere where you get a plate of rice, and you choose little side dishes to go with it. It totally satisfies my craving for trying TONS of various dishes (I never like being stuck with a massive plate of the SAME food) and the dishes are all done home-cooked style and so tasty. Plus, it’s super cheap! We paid about SG$10 for EVERYTHING.. and that was for 3 people! Plus that included a lot of meat dishes and fish, etc. If you opt for 1 Veg + 1 Meat, it’s only SG$2.30. INSANE… in a good way πŸ˜€ Comparatively, you can get the same option in Australian food courts (though the Chinese food is consistently never as good) for over SG$9. Considering it’s about 3x the price for poorer quality, you really wonder about their whopping profit margins!

Anyway, so Economical Rice stalls have really cheap, tasty food.. and I’m annoyed it took me so long to discover them. Still, better late than never πŸ™‚ Since it was the day before the wedding, we had no choice but to eat less.. and so only had 6 side dishes. All were really simple home-cooked dishes, but so satisfying.

“YT” at… errr… no idea where! Around Tanjong Pagar I think.

Braised eggplant. All moist and soft like mashed potato. Mmm…

Sweet & Sour Pork. This was so lean and tasty!

Crispy Breaded Fish

Cabbage. Looks quite depressing but I actually liked it πŸ˜›

Steamed Egg with Minced Pork

Curry Chicken

Also got Manicures! My cousins also got Pedicures but the place was booked out and they couldn’t fit me in. Anyway, the Pedicure was like $17 and there’s no way I’d pay that kind of money for just my toenails, when I reckon I can do it myself πŸ˜› But my nails were worth it at $15, since I wanted a French Manicure. I love the way it turned out!

At least you in Sydney you have much better options than Canberra!!!
But yes, it’s sad that you can’t get some amazing Asian food in Australia that they have in Asia! I guess cos all the really really good chefs stay in Asia… and then only the more mediocre ones who can’t make a good enough living on their jobs in Asia come here. Or the really super good ones come here, realise they have to pander to Western tastes and make still good food but make it “fusion” and then charge $$$ for it!

Hehehhe okay I have to agree, Canberra really SUCKS when it comes to food πŸ˜› But Melbourne is on par with Sydney at least!

And very true about what you said.. I guess after awhile, even the best Asian cooks have to change to cater for different tastebuds πŸ™

cost of raw ingredients is more expensive in australia. as is cost of spices. not to mention cost of labour. plus the actualy know-how of how to cook those yummmies is sorely missing.

eat more while you’re still here!!!!!

Ya, I can’t understand why the ingredients/etc are more expensive in AU.. as in SG we get “air-flown Australian beef/etc” for CHEAPER than it cost in AU! Isn’t that weird???
