No running or exercise? Jeez… you’re more buggered than me! πŸ™

You could at least do walks, right? Also, I wouldn’t count on *never* running again. Stem cell research, artificial body parts, and so on might give you back the ability to run.

Hope the physio goes well… Good luck!

Blech I know.. how are you doing though?!

I’m not even sure if I want to run (ie. not light jog, but a proper race) again, I’m a bit scared off now πŸ˜‰

I know what you mean. I find that once I am mindful of there being a problem, I get a bit paranoid about how I’m feeling. To the point where I wonder if my heart is beating properly or if I’m imagining a small pain in my chest. I’ll be glad once this is all over. πŸ™‚

I think one of my goals for the next year or so will be to take up some running/jogging…

Sorry, I didn’t mean you have to wear ugly shoes πŸ™‚ I do mean the really comfy type shoes though, like Kumfs and Homy Ped etc.. Might also be a good time to find out if you have flat feet at a podiatrist as that can affect your walk and your knee. My sister and I both have bad knees and ankles and wear comfy shoes all the time. I don’t think she’s EVER worn heels.. I know it’s ugly but when you’re old and don’t have deformed toes and wonky hips, knees and ankles you’ll be thankful. You can still wear the heels every now and then, but not too often…. πŸ™‚ GOod luck with it all!! (hugs)

Ooo sorry to hear you’ve got a bad knee as well, we do tend to take health for granted until we don’t have it :X

I’ve been wearing mostly flats and sneakers, so hopefully that’s helping!

OH that’s really sad Bev.. sorry to hear about the bad prognosis of your knee. I had an injury a few years ago and took my knee months to heal and even now every now and then (esp in bad/cold weather) it flares up a bit. If you want it to heal quicker I’d lay off the heels too.. and I don’t mean thongs.. I mean ugly supportive granny type comfy shoes. It’s lucky you caught your problem before it got worse (and would also take longer to heal the older you are!) I’m sure there’s many women with knee/hip/ankle probs and don’t even realise it, and wearing ‘bad’ shoes just makes it worse!

Ah, crap. So sorry to hear you have to go through all this Bev. I have osteoarthritis in both my knees and some other weird name for knees that don’t track properly. I too, can’t do any high impact sports, but the ski machine at the gym, boxing (a bag, not a person :), walking, most pilates and yoga moves, swimming (though I don’t ’cause I don’t really like it) and a little bike riding, I can do.

I mostly stick to walking, the ski machine as it seems gentle on my knees, boxing bag (you don’t have to move your legs much, plenty of upper body, and you still move lots) and a bit of the bike and stepper. My knees still hurt a lot sometimes (as I know I should still be doing strengthening specifically for them), but hopefully after you’ve strengthened your body, corrected your walk etc, you’ll be able to do some of these things. *hugs*

I’m hoping that like you, I’ll be able to do low impact stuff eventually, like 6 months from now. I’m sad I can’t run anymore, I was just starting to enjoy it!

yoga with me baby!!!!! sorry to hear that – that does suck – but it doesn’t mean you have to give up exercise altogether…low impact workouts are fine i’m sure.

AT the moment though, none allowed whatsoever :X At least until I get a few sessions of therapy then I’ll be taught exercises.. but none are high cardio or lose-weight exercise, it’s just all focused on healing the knee. so apparently no exercise for a few months at least for now. Blech!

Swimming not allowed either, for now.. as I may be doing sessions with the physio in the pool. BUt won’t be able to swim normally for a long time, the angle just HURTS!! Esp breast stroke.. OUCH πŸ™

AT the moment I’m not allowed to do ANYTHING, and ideally not walk at all, until I start my therapy.. which is in 2 weeks, so i can’t wait!

The female walk, whatever that really is, is most likely caused because we like to wear high heels. Not very healthy for us at all. I recommend seeing that physical therapist. They will not only teach you how to walk correctly, they will teach you exercises and give you suggestions on how to strengthen it. I would give it 3-6 months before thinking about surgery. (source: i’m going to school to be an occupational therapist. not a PT, but i still have to learn about the skeletomuscular system and stuff….)

Yep I’m seeing an orthopedic specialist that looks after exactly this issue and she’s ranked #1 in the world, so I REALLY HOPE she can fix it…! *fingers crossed*
I’ll be doing what you said above (apparently to strengthen the little surrounding muscles as well to help talk the load off) and the surgeon is seeing me in 6weeks to determine how I’m tracking. Such a hassle.. wish it never happened!

Oh dear, i hope your knee gets better soon. In the meantime, i guess u just have to watch your diet. Ease up on the carbs!! * wags finger at you* πŸ™‚

Ya I hope the physio helps.. especially if she’s meant to be good! I can’t even walk properly now, so def no brisk walking πŸ™

You should try out acupuncture – my friend’s doctor (and then the physio) basically told her that she could never play soccer again because of her dodgy knee, then she went to an acupuncturist who told her that they were complete crap and proceeded to treat her, and what do you know, after a few sessions she was better! πŸ™‚

(Then later she developed some other weird knee thing, but that was fixable by surgery, which she had – and now she can do whatever sport she wants!)

Eeekkkkkkkkkkkk definitely no needles! I totally can’t ever do accupuncture in a million years, I can’t stand the sight of needles πŸ˜›

*hugs*
i guess looking on the bright side of things, at least u can take shopping as a form of exercise? going out on a full day of shopping and walking around all day? πŸ˜‰

Heheheh that DOES hurt though, if I walk around too much! But hopefully after physio i’ll re-learn how to walk properly and will be able to shop til I drop πŸ˜‰

ooh i hope the tear turns out to be superficial and can be corrected by surgery. i had no idea a feminine gait could be so detrimental to the body! but that’s awful, it’s too early and too inconvenient to be dealing with a bad knee at this point in life. how is the pain though? good luck with the therapy!

I reckon it’s really minor otherwise I’ll be totally down-and-out, but tis’ enough to make me really uncomfortable when I walk :X And yeah, it’s embarassing to have a bad knee so young! :X

I’m not allowed to swim until the physio does therapy with me :X currently it hurts ‘cos of the angle i move my legs or something, so annoying!

I’ve never done yoga but it sounds fairly sedate to me, I think I prefer cardio to lose weight? I miss jogging! πŸ™

Also I heard water aerobics are good for people with bad knees. There’s a ton of other excercises you can try. Of course, it’s not running but I’m sure you can find something else you like.

There are so many other exercises you can do! Look into Pilates… it’s a BLAST and most of it can be done on the mat, laying on your butt! I do it two times a week in class and sometimes just for fun… it is incredibly strengthening and toning!

Also, what about swimming? Bike riding? Yoga? I’m sure you won’t have to resign to a life of no exercise. πŸ™‚ I don’t run, because I believe it’s terrrible for you (it just FEELS rough on your body) and I manage to stay fit through other exercises.

I hadn’t even thought about pilates…. so thanks for the tip πŸ˜› BUt I have to pay for classes and I like free exercise, I’m so cheap, haha! I guess I’ll have no choice though so I’ll investigate how $$ it is here..

So sorry to hear about this, Bev, especially since you’ve been enjoying being fitter lately! I hope you get some relief soon. Good luck with the Physio.
