Pre-Pho Vietnamese & Chinese Restaurant
261 Rowe St
Eastwood, NSW 2122

What surprises me is how this place is relatively unknown online amongst foodaholics, I never seem to see any reviews on Pre-Pho @ Eastwood. Yet, the place is always full of Asians chowing away at their meals – a sure sign the place is 1) authentic and 2) serves good food. I fully agree with the crowd. Easily and by far the best and most authentic Vietnamese food I’ve had in Sydney, in my opinion. It’s a “hole in the wall” type of place – don’t expect fancy service and ambience. It’s a simple, quick and easy place with friendly and brisk service. Brightly lit inside, you can opt from their extensive menu or choose from specials displayed on a “no frills” whiteboard stuck on the wall.

This time, we decided to veer from our usual choices *shock*. We noticed that almost all the tables had Special Beef Fillet in Black Pepper Sauce, with Tomato Fried Rice. Sounded pretty un-exciting on the menu, so I’d never noticed it. But it looked delicious and tasty on the other tables, so we chose that. And boy, delicious and tasty it was!! The beef came in small chunks (could have given a bigger portion though) and was super soft and the flavour of the black pepper was insanely good (I’m normally not a fan of black pepper sauce, so it takes a lot to convince me!). There were also little bits of onion and tomato mixed in the sauce, with the whole mixture sitting in a lettuce ‘cup’. The Tomato Fried Rice was, as always, a winner – moist but not soggy and with the perfect hint of tomato. Many Vietnamese places offer this but can never seem to do it spot-on.

Also opted for Fresh Rice Paper Rolls with Pork, Prawns and Veg.. to try and be healthy. I like Pre-Pho’s version because it comes with 2-4 prawns, slices of pork and just stuffed with vermicilli, veggies and such. Best value for money 🙂 The sauce they serve it with is delicious, a mix of Hoisin sauce with something.. I can’t put my finger on it, but it makes the sauce thick and creamy.. with a splattering of crumbled peanuts over the top. YUM :)~

Re: Hey!!

Hey guys,

Was just performing random searches and found this review and isn’t this a small world. I frequent this little unknown eatery on a weekly basis. Kinda have to say I’m addicted to the food there :D. They also have just introduced a new dinner menu that is available during the evening. Consist of some vietnamese salads to your usual chinese favorites such as sweet and sour pork. I’m a big fan of the the lemon grass chicken salad, lemon grass chicken in general lol

LOVE vietnamese food!! My SO is Vietnamese, which is both good and bad: he is super super picky so we rarely go out to eat Pho, but when we do, it is always delish!

I think it is peanut sauce mixed with the hoisin, which makes it a little nutty and not too hoisin-tangy. At least, that is how all the authentic pho places have it here.

You’ve got me craving pho like crazy!

Ooo lucky you, he must know the best Vietnamese places to go!

I think your’e right about the sauce.. thanks for the tip, next time I have people over I’ll make Vietnamese rolls now 😀

I love fresh rice paper rolls – they are SO yummy and you always feel like your eating something healthy when you eat them. There arent a ton of places for me to get them where I am…I really should try and make some…but I keep thinking that working with the thin rice paper will be really tricky 🙂

I love that new icon your using of you with the menu…lol…always makes me laugh

I’ve made the rolls before! It’s actually not too hard but the meal’s a little fiddly to prepare cos you need so many ingredients chopped up. I’ve decided it’s good if you have 4+ people eating, then it’s worth it and makes a really cheap meal too!

That makes sense… Did you use a recipe or just chop up what you had in the house? Ive had them out and they usually have boiled shrimp, cucumbers…noodles…carrot um… other veggies 🙂 I think the sauce was a hot and sweet thin sauce, not a soy based sauce. The ones you had had other things in them too tho? pork right?

if you do have a recipe that you used pass it on… if not I’ll buy the wrappers and wing it

I pretty much just do it my way and put in whatever I like.. I tend to use prawns, sliced pork, vermicilli, mint, basil, and whatever else I can find around hehe. And for sauce i use Hoisin mixed with a lil water and add chopped peanuts!

Oh we went Sat evening!

Chris *always* gets that Crispy skin chicken & tomato rice 😛 it’s so good hey.. I also like the Rice noodies in beef soup with Crispy chicken. YUM

Yes! Filled with asians is always a good sign. =D The one time I ignored the total lack of asians in an asian restaurant, the food was bland and overpriced.

Never again!

Heh so true.. I always look for places that are filled with their local people.. like Italians in Italian restaurants and so on. The best way to see if a restaurant is authentic!
