FOOD, Living in... Singapore, Uncategorized GOLDEN ROOSTER, LOTUS THAI 16 August 2006

Since I started trying to exercise and eat less a few months ago, I’ve noticed my waist has narrowed. Which is a HIP HIP HOORAY on the one hand, but on the other, I’ve in-grown (is that the opposite of ‘out-grown?) almost all of my Alannah Hill pants and skirts, collected over the years πŸ™ They just gape at the waist area, and/or swing round and around. Plus, Alannah Hill actually doesn’t make a size smaller, so buying everything in a smaller size is out of the question. So I can either:

1) Gain weight so I can fit into my clothes again
2) Alter my entire wardrobe to a smaller size

Talk about being between a rock and a hard place! πŸ™ I haven’t made up my mind yet, but in the interim I’m going to start whacking a bunch of the definitely-too-big clothes on eBay. I also brought some skirts back to Singapore to get altered (as it’s cheaper here). Also considering writing in to Alannah Hill and begging them to bring out a smaller size for their bottoms πŸ˜›

Anyway, we went to Coronation Plaza again since I was getting my skirts altered there. And, of course, ate at Golden Rooster again.. since it’s the best πŸ˜› I opted for their Daily Special, Ipoh Hor Fun. At first, I was a bit weirded out as the gravy was really thick and starchy.. but once I mixed it up with the noodles it was fine. The hor fun noodles were silky smooth and served with a generous portion of sliced shitake mushrooms, which gave the noodles a kick of flavour. The thinly shredded deep-fried chicken was the perfect accompaniment!

Mum opted for the Curry Chicken, Tofu and Veg with Rice.. which I didn’t try, but must’ve been nice as she bought another 2 portions for the maids for their lunch. It looked yum, anyway πŸ™‚ Dad got the Chicken Chop with Baked Beans, Coleslaw, Fries and Deep-fried Bun. He basically inhaled the whole plate before I even got a chance to try it, but I did sneak a few fries off his plate πŸ˜›

Golden Rooster @ Coronation Plaza

Ipoh Hor Fun (SG$2.50)

Curry Chicken, Tofu and Veg with Rice (SG$3.00)

Chicken Chop with Baked Beans, Coleslaw, Fries and Deep-fried Bun (SG$4.50)

Spent the rest of the afternoon with mum shopping around Takashimaya and Wisma Atria. Didn’t buy anything though *proud*. That’s probably because we were more interested in eating than shopping – hee! Had our tea-time at the foodcourt, which consisted of various goodies:

Assorted chocolates

‘Clods’ – I believe these are Canadian. LOVE THESE!!

Singaporean iced coffee (nb: completely different
from the regular Western-style ice coffee)

Crystal Jade mushroom & chicken puffs, sitting pretty

Crystal Jade mushroom & chicken puff.. mmm…

Crystal Jade bun with red bean filling and cheese topping

Crystal Jade chicken pie – so wee and cute!

Had Gelare @ Plaza Singapura waffles and ice cream.. mmm…

Lotus Thai Restaurant

7 of us got together for dinner tonight at Lotus Thai, recommended by who brought us all there and did the ordering. It’s a little cosy restaurant along a busy foodie street, and whilst it was fairly quiet, apparently it’s a lot busier during lunch when the office workers come for some Thai fodder.

I’m usually pretty boring when it comes to Thai food – I either have Pad Thai or Green Curry.. I’m not very adventurous. So pretty much every dish that appeared at our table was totally new and foreign to mee – very exciting πŸ˜€ The service was really attentive and friendly, which is always appreciated! Overall, the food was really good – but I’d personally only have it once every few months. I found the food super flavourful and spicy and deep-fried, so it’s enough to tide me over a few months before I start craving it again. Reasonably priced though, it worked out to about $20pp and we were really stuffed afterwards!

Lotus Thai Restaurant

Prawn crackers with spicy dipping sauce

Lemongrass salad with prawns

Pineapple rice

Squid fried with garlic

Seafood tom yum soup

Deep-fried egg omelette

Kang Kong veggies in sambal

Seafood otak in coconut

Chicken deep-fried in pandan leaves

Steamed Groupa fish with lemon & lime spicy sauce

Tapioca dessert with coconut milk

‘Red Rubies’ – water chestnut bits in a squishy tapioca coating,
served with coconut milk.

I was asked to take the last photo with my Jade & gold bracelet, which Mum gave to me yesterday πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ The reason was “Jade and Rubies”.. haha!! It’s actually a family heirloom (the jade bracelet, that is.. not the Red Rubies dessert). Or rather, it WILL be one πŸ˜› My grandmother gave it to my mum.. who gave it to me.. and I’ll give it to my daughter eventually. It’s really delicate and, unbelievably, fits my wrist without having to be altered! I really love it. And it goes with the Jade leaf-shaped necklace that I was also given. It was actually given to me by my grandmother when I was born.. but I didn’t know about it ’till yesterday. Jade is just so lovely! πŸ™‚ Am obessed with it now.

Anyway, we took a wander around after dinner and found ourselves poking our noses into Scarlet Hotel which is this sexy boutique-y type hotel.. all dark and moody inside and very hoity toity. So what did we do? We didn’t go in for some dessert.. or even for a drink.. instead, we went to use their bathrooms! Haha! They were really love though, and it took us a few secs to figure out the taps πŸ˜‰

Interesting taps at the Scarlet Hotel

Scarlet Hotel: It’s ok lah…I was very disappointed by the rooms when I stayed there a couple of times. BUT! Definitely check out their rooftop lounge/bar Breeze if you get a chance…it’s a lovely place for a quiet drink. And following the above poster’s comments on Hotel 1929, try to have dinner at Ember if you haven’t already…yuuuummmmm!

The weight’s not too good now, put on since coming back to SG *growls*…..

We were going to check out that bar, but didn’t end up doing so! Anyway the parentals wouldn’t have been keen on a drink πŸ˜›

Hey, I think the same as you! When I lose weight, my only regrets is the clothes I love so much couldn’t fit nicely anymore. Bummer, isn’t it?

Btw, I am not a fan of oreo with the cream but I simply adore the double filling oreos.

I wouldn’t mind as much if they sold a smaller size.. then i’d just sell all my clothes and re-buy in the smaller size. I just dont’ want to have to alter my whole wardrobe, it’s a hassle :X

I haven’t had double filling…. oooooo!!

mm all food loook good! I had soo much oreo this time at the States! I love them, so much junk food and they are so cheap!not only gained weight, i gained pimples too πŸ™

LOL! You’re probably the only person who would consider putting weight back on to fit into Alannah Hill! =D

I think it’s a crap situation! Who wants to actually PUT on weight?? πŸ™ And yet I don’t want to spend $$$ altering all my clothes. I think she should just make smaller sizes – problem solved πŸ˜›

There’s so much more variety in shapes and sizes these days, they definitely need to update the basis of sizing. How many years have people been harping on about how sizes are based on 1950’s (or 60’s?) measurements and yet we still haven’t moved away from them!

People are definitely bigger, but often people can be a lot smaller too. Even our body shapes have changed.

Hmmm…more food pics..lso it’s called kang kong, i have no idea what they call it here in the states, something weird i think, but i love that veggie hee hee..

I THINK it’s called “morning glory” but can’t remember if that’s the english for kang kong or another veggie…
It’s yum though πŸ™‚

You need to stop posting all these delicious food photos, I get so hungry every time I check my friends page! πŸ˜›

oh my goodness, the hor fun looks so nice and at $2.50 – you can never go wrong!
been loving to read your posts with all the delicious photos of the food in singapore, makes me want to go there soon πŸ˜›

It gives me such pleasure to have such cheap food… heheh..
Do come for a visit if you get a chance, it’s a foodie/shopping paradise πŸ™‚

the food at golden rooster looks sooooooooooo good! I love ipoh hor fun! your mom’s chicken curry looks yummy too! fantastic thai food – I can have just the pineapple fried rice & pandan chicken only!!! I haven’t had that tapioca dessert for years :)~~~~~~~~~~

That ipoh horfun was so terrific.. but I think the ORIGINAL stuff is a bit different, as mine had fried chicken πŸ˜›

yeah yeah the original is shredded chicken meat =D and I think the hor fun is supposedly hand made and very fine & smooth.

btw, the taps at Scarlett Hotel are from Kohler =D Waterfall taps

You really should try the stuff at Coronation Arcade, its the stretch beside Shell Petrol Kiosk before King’s Arcade after Coronation Plaza. They have the Chicken rice there, which is really good and the Thai Noodle House is not bad too. But then I pay student rates for the Thai noodle house stuff so perhaps it’s a little biased in that sense. Or you can try the stuff at the Cosy Corner (in Coronation Plaza) like the Katsudon and other rice sets. πŸ™‚ Don’t just stick with Golden Rooster (I personally think it’s a bit dry)! πŸ˜€
