Makan @ Alice’s

Alice’s again for lunch. Chris has declared that we have to visit Alice’s “a minimum of once every two weeks” – this means he can get hs char kway teow then. His other stipulation is if I would like him to get any other dish or dessert (apart from his standard sago with gula melaka), then we have to go on the weekends in-between. WHEW, that sounds like a LOT of Alice’s!!

So anyway, he of course had his char kway teow today…. but decided that it wasn’t as “char” as the last time. It tasted the same to me?? His tastebuds are super sensitised to picking up the subtle variations of char kway teow now, haha.

I decided to try a dish I hadn’t had there before, so settled on Mee Goreng (Fried Hokkien noodles in rich tomato soy sauce with prawn fritters, potato, tomato, tofu & choy sum). Now, before I get into it, I’d like to point out that the “mee goreng” that you’ve had in food courts in Australia (and probably anywhere else besides Singapore) is TOTALLY different. Frankly, the food-court “mee goreng” is a joke, and tastes like crap. Real Mee Goreng doesn’t even taste anything like that! Alice’s does it superbly – with exactly the right amount of tomato soy sauce and the correct ingredients and texture. Bliss! I thought they could’ve used more oil though, to make the noodles more ‘slippery’, but I guess it’s healthier this way πŸ˜‰ It looks really salty in the pic, but it was just full of rich flavour and not salty or overpowering at all. It was totally fantastic πŸ™‚

Decided on a Chendol (Homemade springy pandan strands, grass jelly & red bean in coconut milk with shaved ice & rich gula melaka) for dessert. I love this drink/dessert! All rich with coconut milk and with the awesome flavour of gula melaka… ahhhh…. this beats a chocolate cake ANY DAY.

Have you tried cooking your own mee goreng? I first tried the mee goreng at Traders and fell in love with it. Traders had the vegetarian version of mee goreng. My hubby’s attempt in copying the Trader’s vegetarian mee goreng was a successful one! Maybe you should try cooking your own mee goreng some time.

I haven’t! Not sure how to make the sauce.. I should try though, I think Prima has a mee goreng sauce so I might cheat and try that one out first πŸ˜›

That would be really nice!! Thanks so much.. it’ll be authentic since it comes from you guys, I fear random recipes that I find online, hehe

You’re welcome πŸ™‚ I’ll email you the recipe later in the morning.

Oh by the way, my hubby and I also can pick up the subtle variations in Char Kuah Teow. We call it the CKT. Our favourite CKT stall is at a humble hawker centre in Telok Blangah. The name of the CKT is Sea Sparrow (aka Hai3 Yan4)

When my overseas friend visited me, I actually brought her there to try out the CKT hehe. And she loved it.

wow!! chris likes asian food!! aren’t u lucky to have a man who enjoys food from ur authenticity.. πŸ˜€ i know a poor babe who now only survives on pasta and burgers.. LOLL!

He likes Singaporean food.. which is great πŸ˜€ But we love all sorts of food from various cuisines too, I think we’re both just greedy, haha!

You can get an authentic Char Kway Teow, Mee Goreng, and Chendol in Indonesia. As a matter of fact, I think you can get everything Alice’s sells in Indonesia. I believe they’re as authentic and tasty as they are in Singapore πŸ™‚ I have to agree that Mee Goreng in food courts in Australia tastes like crap.

Yeah Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia I consider all roughly the same in terms of food (mainly because SG has so many M’sians and Indonesians!) But I mean outside of SE Asia, you can’t really get the real thing :X

Y’know, I’ve never had a real Chendol in SG… I never used to like SG food until I moved to Australia, so most of the food I’ve first eaten here in AU! Weird πŸ˜›
