FOOD, Uncategorized HOMECOOKED FRIED RICE 26 April 2006

I bought a Powerball! Y’see.. I’m every marketer’s dream – I’ll see an ad in a magazine or on TV, and I instantly want the product *groans* You’d think that I’d know better since I’m now working IN marketing.. but noooooo. Advertising still gets me every time! I did a search on eBay and found a ton selling there, so I bought mine there – since it was so much cheaper than retail for a new-in-box Powerball.

Anyway, I read that this was great for exercising your arms and wrists. I always get RSI from using the computer so much, so I thought it’d be a good idea. And OKAY OKAY, it looked cute too!! I’m pretty fascinated with it.. I finally figured out how to use it and it really does work out my arms – *ouch*! Just 3 mins of using it and I couldn’t grip my fork when I was eating lunch afterwards. On second thoughts.. maybe that was only because I’m such a weakling with spindly arms. Hrm.

Anyway, tonight I made fried rice and served it with panfried salmon belly that I got from the Fish Markets yesterday. I got the idea for fried rice because I had some that a colleague gave me last week and it was sooooooo good. I didn’t have a recipe though, so just did it my own way.. chucking in all sorts of stuff like:

Rice (well, duh)
Eggs
Onion
Spam!
Carrot
Capsicum
Chorizo sausage
Mushrooms
Corn
Sauces (dark soy, light soy, fish sauce, Maggi seasoning sauce)

It turned out really well.. considering it was just a mish-mash of random stuff! Had no idea what I was doing, but it worked out – the rice was DEEEEELICIOUS!! πŸ˜€ So insanely tasty and I made a big batch so it makes about 4-5 meals. I decided to pan fry the salmon belly plain, with only salt/pepper, because I didn’t want to intefere with the creaminess and taste of the salmon. It was so smooth and buttery, and went so well with the fried rice :)~ All served up with some Maggi garlic chilli sauce? PERFECT!! And all up, the meal cost less than AUD$8 to make.. and will feed 4-5 people. That’s less than $2 per person! NOTHING is more satisfying than an incredibly cheap, but utterly delicious, meal :)~

I LOVE SPAM!! It’s also good pan-fried and served
with plain rice and ketchup.. mmmm….. :)~

Ingredients all chopped up

Gorgeous slippery salmon bellies

All cooked up – check out the lovely fat!

My dinner :)~

I’d made fried rice once before but it was a DISASTER as I’d used freshly cooked wet/sticky rice… it was the worst :X This was heapppppps better, haha!

Is spam what we call luncheon meat over in sg?

I’m like you too, I so wanted to get a powerball but the price (sg 50) held me back.

i too am a marketers dream living in a marketer world…we make the world go round we do!

So your the one who keeps spam alive!

Reading your entries makes me sooooooo hungry! I hate being a college student and having to eat cafeteria food! I always feel so inspired to cook up your yummy-looking dishes, but alas, nowhere to do so.

I was a college student only 2 years ago too! College food was so horrid I ate at mcDonalds pretty much every night πŸ˜›

I knooow! i LOVE spam. I love sausages too. I love that sort of dirty unhealthy who-know-what’s-in-it kinda food πŸ˜‰

I used to own a powerball. I’m sure it’s still around somewhere. But when I was really young and played with it, there were times where I lost control of the ball and it kinda flew out of my hands. >.<

Hhahah! so funny πŸ˜› But when it’s going top speed it also feels like it’s going to fly out of my hands too :X

I actually went to the gym before cooking πŸ˜› I don’t really get tired in the evenings..I’m reinvigorated when I get home from work!

oh how i envy you…I can never find that cheap seafood in Queen Vic market, especially when it comes to salmon belly.

Speaking of which, you should really try the salmon belly soup @ Sushi Tei (Paragon) when you back in Singapore. Out of this world!

It’s pretty $$ in Singapore.. but for some reason people in Sydney don’t think salmon belly is worth eating or something, it’s so dirt cheap πŸ˜›

And oooo the soup sounds so nice!! I gotta try it out, is it new? never heard of it… must remember to have it when I’m back πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the tip

It’s one of their staples, with yummylicious veges that provide lotsa flavour in it…but it’s the oily salmon belly that makes it special. And it’s healthy, so it doesn’t make u feel guilty!

Salmon belly is really fatty, that’s why it has so many strips of white through it.. it’s a lot softer, tender and creamier.

You can eat it raw in sashimi, or cook it up like I did tonight. It’s YUM! :)~
