Good on you! There’s nothing better than having a goal in life and achieving it (which I am 150% positive that you will do!)

Bev this is great! So inspiring. I wish I could run 7km non-stop. I have no idea how far I could run at the moment. I’m just remembering a few years ago when I tried running 2 blocks uphill and I sounded like I had asthma =/

I’m glad to read that you sound really determined! Good luck! I’m working on becoming more athletic myself. Keep on posting- it gets me motivated to go out running or hop over to the gym! πŸ˜‰

I hope i keep it up though πŸ™‚

Hehe get thee some exercise today!!! And then you can reward yourself with some chocolate or something πŸ˜›

I hope so! I don’t enjoy the actual exercise… but I enjoy having the determination and reaching goals, so I’ll just use that as a motivator instead πŸ˜‰

You know what really bothers me? Its the percent of overweight kids…. I dont know what the tally is in the US but its REALLY high and now kids are having tons of adult onset degernerative diseases like diabetes, joint disease, high blood pressue. SLEEP APNEA for petes sake. At least an adult can take control or not – his/her choice…but the kids are in the learning phase… and fixing habits that will last for a life. and if they are obese and diabetic at 7…well…i just think that is so sad.

sigh. well sorry ’bout that. it just bugs me and makes me sad :o(

i think your getting healthy is great…your not focusing on just ‘im not going to eat’ your exercising, plus your eating healthy stuff… sounds like your doing great πŸ™‚

I see almost every kid around me eating junk all the time.. I’d do it to myself, but I’d NEVER do it to my children – that’s called bad parenting imho. I’m really against obese people, even if that doesn’t sound politically correct. I’ve NEVER seen someone be super fit and eat well and still be obese..

Exercise

After a few injuries and physical therapy, I just hired a personal trainer and I already feel the benefit. In my case, better late than never but what a revelation to find the benefits of exercise at my age (63).

Re: Exercise

I’m too cheap to pay for a personal trainer… πŸ˜› I agree though, they do help you target exactly what you want to do, and you know you’re not damaging yourself in some way. Maybe I’ll do just 1 session and see how I go! I think it’s fab that you’re exercising too!

The statistics for obesity are rising as well, and it’s terrifying to see that so many people are just overweight.

Too much t.v., not ambition to do anything but eat and then sit around is really starting to bother me about people but it always has.

-shrugs- I’m one of these people that really can’t stand it when I see someone who is SEVERELY obese and is scarfing down four big macs and three biggie cokes and then thinks that the reason they are obese is because it’s “in the family.”

I’m a very opinionated girl on the subject. So, I’ll stop. Hah.

And I think you look great! Good luck!

20 years ago there were a LOT less overweight people.. I think it’s just the diet and the amount of food people eat.

I can’t STAND seeing someone really fat scoffing junk food either!! But I’m a hypocrite cos I scoff junk food myself πŸ˜› And I hate people that blame being fat on their “genes”.. just sounds lazy to me πŸ˜›

Hi bev! I think exercise is great for you, as a goal-oriented person. I find that my challenge is getting past certain plateaus (running 5k 3x a week for example), but you seem to be doing just fine with raising your own standards! (I also have a problem keeping my diet healthy, especially as Singapore has such yummy fatty food.)

I also have this theory that if you can run up to a certain distance regularly, you probably can run *at least* 1.5 times that distance on a special occasion (read: race). So if you can run 7k now, you can probably run a 10k race at this point, which means it will take you another month or two at most to hit 14k… πŸ˜‰

Ooooer it’s impsosible to eat healthy in SG, imho!! the food’s just way TOO good πŸ˜›

I like your theory, heheheh. I’m going to try and jog 10km non-stop soon.. I’d like to reach that goal in about 2 months πŸ™‚

That’s great that you are getting so motivated and healthy but I wouldn’t try bringing your fat levels down to 11% – that would become really unhealthy πŸ™ It would mess with your hormone levels and fertility big time πŸ™

sorry, hope I’m not coming across the wrong way (thanks for not deleting me btw) but just presenting the facts (ie it’s not just my personal opinion)

“We believe female athletes in their early 20s may be at risk for premature heart disease, too.”

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Menstruation_athletic_amenorrhoea?OpenDocument

“It is suspected that low body fat levels and exercise related chemicals (such as beta endorphins and catecholamines) disrupt the interplay of the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Long term complications of untreated athletic amenorrhoea include susceptibility to broken bones and premature ageing.”

I never take those “you should be xx” to heart. As if I do, then I’ve been considered incredibly underweight my entire life – but I don’t like severely underweight, just average. And I used to be 17% body fat, which is considered really low, but at 17% I had a pot belly and certainly had flabby bits.

The dietitician said that it’s important not to live b y those measurements , as they’re often incorrect for a specific person. That’s why i don’t believe them πŸ˜‰

All kudos for your exercise discipline πŸ™‚
I’ve been also trying to control my food intake since a month ago. I found that the best thing to control my appetite is, I should first recognize the capacity of my own stomach, whether it’s already full or not. Before it’s too full, I stop eating and finish the rest when hunger comes.

I just hope I can keep it up! πŸ˜‰

Yeah, I’m trying to do the “eat till you’re only just full” thing, it takes a lot of self-control though.. I’m just so used to eating until I physically can’t eat anymore – that’s the hardest bit to change!

my ankles are A-OK but my knees are killing me.. they’re really sore and tender. And at first I thought it’s just cos I’m not used to exercise, but they still hurt now. I think my shoes aren’t good enough :X

14km non-stop? i can’t do that, but i’m sure you can and you WILL succeed! as for me, i’m just gonna wait for this year’s New Paper Big Walk (if there’s going to be one again) and walk the entire 10km for a start.

14km non-stop’s gonna be tough.. but I do have 6 months to train, so I want to get there πŸ™‚

It’s tougher in SG, cos the weather’s so hot! the City2surf is in winter so it’s around 14 celcius, nice and cool!

you have a good willpower – just don’t go overboard and become obsessed with exercising and what not. You’re allowed to relax and have fun (and eat a treat)… you’re still young! πŸ˜€

The food part I’m not going gungho.. I like food waaay too much πŸ˜›

But the exercise part I’m going to be determined on!

i don’t think you are overweight at all in the first place. 44kg is just fine, super thin isn’t…. look at MK when she was just skin and bones….so ewww.

I’m not overweight.. but I KNOW I’ll get there in a few years at the rate I was going, it’s a scary thought!

Nah don’t want to be all bony, that’s ugly anyway :X

Nope, still can be leaner.. I do have a pot belly which drives me nuts! I don’t want to be thin as in bony, but thin as in lean and trim πŸ™‚

honestly, i think u look absolutely fantastic now..
they are normally referring to ozzies who have lots of spare tyres hanging around their tummies and stuff.. i saw that report too and it’s not a normality for asians to look liek that.. not sure why
perhaps the diet.. we tend to take spicier food or more sour stuff n that helps with digestion..
pure ozzies take loads of deep fried stuff and cheezey stuff..
oh man.. can’t imagine myself gorging nothing but burgers n fries everyday

I know I look ok, but that’s only if you compare me to a really obese person. If you compare to an athelete, then I have a loooong way to go πŸ˜›

I put on A LOT of flab in Australia when I started eating fried/cheesy/creamy food :X The helpings are mega too!!

hahahaha!! i had a culture shock too.. when i first came.. in SG im considered a rather slim (not skinny) person, but geez, when i came to AU, my ozzie mates were calling me a twig!! or saying i was skinny as !
but honestly, for an asian, u look really fine. don’t worry!! ur stressing out too much. breath!! πŸ™‚

Hehe yeah, I think a lot of people get that too!

I really want to be fit though.. I’m kinda embarassed at the junk and amount of food that I eat, and lack of exercise.. bleah

A lot of my friends are saying it’s my latest obsession.. like LV bags or Balenciaga bags. But I’m happy, it’s a more productive obsession than buying handbags, right? πŸ˜›
