I have an Apple Powerbook but wouldn’t recommend it since you are obvious looking for a Windows Machine. I think most offices (according to you anyway) use Dell because it’s cheap? Really not too sure but my bf has a Dell and he loves it and I think it’s pretty good too. It’s a Latitude something (14 or 15″ screen). The screen is really sharp (sharper than mine dare I say it but that may be cos mine is so small). It weighs less than my 12″ laptop!

OHhh yeah I’ve heard the Latitude series is really good – I was eyeing the Latitude 6000 which isn’t too $$, so maybe either that or a Toshiba? But from the sounds of it, the Latitude sounds cool πŸ˜€

my brother has a sony vaio, and it’s a pretty sturdy laptop, he likes it.
i have this: http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=S62
a fujitsu lifebook, i like it because it’s light and thin (not really what you’re looking for though), has a “crystal” view screen so its really clear and not like usual laptop monitors, also has an SD card slot (perfect since that’s what my camera uses). i’ve had it for a about a year and a half, no problems so far, but i only got the 40GB hard drive, you might want the 60GB.
you don’t usually hear about fujitsu laptops much, but i like mine alot πŸ™‚

Yeah I like clear screens, so many laptops I’ve seen have this muted/fuzzy look, you know what I mean? Hard drive size isn’t too important to me, I don’t have too much stuff πŸ˜›

Laptops are required at my school, so I can round up some stats/trends I’ve seen –
Dells can be dropped and still function, it’s quite amazing actually…their new 17″ one is bulky and not portable, but great for just keeping it in one place and watching movies on it or something. The resolution is pretty nice. Generally though, they’re not the most high-performing laptops, and if you run heavy computations or lots of imaging software at the same time, they really dip in performance.
HP/Compaqs are not dependable and most people replaced theirs after 1-2 years…no good.
Toshibas are durable if you take care of them – I didn’t have to reinstall Windows on mine for the first two years I had it…HOWEVER, recently they’ve had some bad apples that really brought down the brand name. If you’ve got a good one, you can depend on it to do heavy computations. Their service is pretty good – most of the time they’ll replace the parts under warranty quickly.
Lenovo/IBM Thinkpads are the “professional” choice at a lot of big firms, but personally I think people just bought them coz IBM is such a huge company and most businesses partner with them at some point…they’re really nothing special and the configurations for wireless etc., aren’t the most user-friendly. The ones without a touchpad are small but drive me insane with that little button thingie…grrrr!

Hope this helps!

Most companies partner with Dell or HP/Compaq because of price-points. IBM has some pretty innovative and nifty features, especially when it comes to security and laptop durability. But at a pricepoint that’s not comparable to most other brands. It’s not the wireless config that’s the issue here, it’s how secure your wireless transmission is.

I recnetly got an IBM ThinkPad T42. I really love it, though I initially wanted a Sony VAIO. The ThinkPad has turned out to be awesome and cheaper than the VAIO; I think mine was about $1400.

I’ll third the two Apple comments above… get a 15″ Powerbook! The new TFT displays are INCREDIBLE and the 15″ has a 1440×960 resolution… plus it’s really quiet and has a 1.67MHz processor. I ♥ mine.

I thought MS was against their full-timers using anything but PCs?? I guess if people don’t go on about it, they don’t care as much πŸ˜›
the iBooks are reallllyyyy pretty though

I think they discourage the use because they offer perks like discounts on dells but my bf has always been a Mac user and he didn’t intend on giving it up just because he works at Microsoft.
The ibooks have really cool features and you can upgrade them to have lots of memory or a larger hard drive. I love mine.

Mine looks like an iBook – white and all and best of all it’s a PC! I should show you sometime and let you test drive it! However, it costs more then what you’ve budgeted for. I got mine through salary sacrifice…hence reduced the amount of tax I need to pay!

Ooooo that sounds nice, what laptop do you have?

I’m going to do it via salary sacrifice too and claim it on tax, but I STILL want it to be cheap, hehe

but if u really HAVE to have a PC, and don’t mind splashing out a bit, fujitsu!

Hey Beverly, have you ever heard of a brand called ASUS? They’re a Taiwanese brand that R&D’s in motherboards and have recently (I guess last 2-3 years) expanded out into systems including laptops. I did quite a lot of research and was considering buying a Toshiba Portege M300 but in the end I got the ASUS W5A and have absolute no regrets with the quality.

I work in IT and all of my colleagues have ASUS laptops too and swear by it! Cheapest deals on most laptops of various brands can be found from a computer store called Computer World on York Street, Town Hall.

Here’s their website:

http://www.cworld.com.au

Here’s the ASUS website

http://www.asus.com

They’ve got lightweight laptops through to desktop replacement laptops, mind you the cost is probably comparible with Toshiba but more than DELLs – but as they say…you pay for quality! Personally I don’t like DELLs as the quality isn’t as refined as with some of the better brands. Big company’s use them coz they’re relatively cheap and can get big saving purchasing them in bulk.

ASUS is big throughout Asia and the UK and are getting big here in Australia also. Recently they had advertising in Wynyard and Town Hall stations.

I probably sound like a salesman for ASUS! But in all honesty I’d go either them, Toshiba or IBM.

Good luck shopping!

BTW

Don’t get a DELL πŸ™‚

I’m sure u do, and I’ve used DELLs in my current/previous offices. KPMG has a way of making u carry around 10KG worth of laptop on your backs, and it’s not fun. The casing looks cheap, the build looks tacky. I soooooo wouldn’t recommend a dell πŸ™‚

Go Toshiba! I went from a toshiba to a HP then back to a Toshiba…. i heart my toshiba!

haha i’m getting a dell laptop from work soon. my boyfriend’s work laptop is a dell…i think it’s the cheapness but still a namebrand.

i’m on a tobisha now and you’d cry if you saw it! it’s old and boxy and from 1997. i’m actually impressed by how well it’s held up. and i didn’t even take that good care of it.

I am currently using a compaq laptop, more meant for students I reckon. But, it definitely works much better than an acer (my previous laptop).

I heard Toshiba was the best from our IT guy.. do you mind telling me how much that model is approx? I’m looking for something under AU$2,000!

I think it was about 2,700 EUROS but there is one with a smaller screen which is of course less expensive.

I am really happy with Toshiba. It’s my second one and I only had a HD problem once and they replaced it immediately.

I haven’t heard of ASUS at all! I’ll as Chris if he has.. I actually work at York St, so I can check out computer World.. thanks for the tip πŸ˜€

Go Toshiba! I went from a toshiba to a HP then back to a Toshiba…. i heart my toshiba!

i’m on a tobisha now and you’d cry if you saw it! it’s old and boxy and from 1997. i’m actually impressed by how well it’s held up. and i didn’t even take that good care of it.

compaq?

I am currently using a compaq laptop, more meant for students I reckon. But, it definitely works much better than an acer (my previous laptop).

I heard Toshiba was the best from our IT guy.. do you mind telling me how much that model is approx? I’m looking for something under AU$2,000!

I think it was about 2,700 EUROS but there is one with a smaller screen which is of course less expensive.

I am really happy with Toshiba. It’s my second one and I only had a HD problem once and they replaced it immediately.
