the problem with buying contacts online is that you can’t try out the many types/varieties of contacts available. each lens and company that produce them are different in some way. for instance, acuvue2 is the most marketed product but the lens are very thin – good to allow more oxygen into the eyes, bad because they’re uncomfortable and uneasy to get used to at first. are you a seasoned contact lens wearer? in that case, it’s okay to buy online since you know what prescription and brand you want already.

otherwise, go to a local optician/optometrist, speak to him/her about wanting to try out a few “samples”. they should be free of cost because they were freely distributed by the manufacturer and because they want your business. strongly recommended a full eye exam prior to purchasing your new contacts lens if you haven’t done so already or if it’s been past a year since the last exam. glasses don’t directly touch your eyes; contact lens do so you want to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary (ie damage) in your eyes.

haha, i used to work at an optometrist office. =P

Actually, I think for people who have never worn contacts before, Acuvue2 is one of the most popular brands because it is so thin and easy to get used to. My optometrist was telling me that people who wear other brands have some difficulty getting used to the thinness, but new people have no problems at all and find it very comfortable right away. Like me, I thought it was great from the minute she helped poked the lens into my eye. πŸ˜€ (ok, it wasn’t that bad)

yup, definitely got that reaction re: acuve2 too when helping poke lens into people’s eyes! (fun fun) but also had some people who didn’t like it. myself for one, i don’t use it.

but there are another reasons why optometrists press certain brands on people. psst …they get them cheaper if they can sell more of it. it’s marketable because people know the brand name and optometrists make a nice profit. let’s just say acuvue reps are quite good at selling and leave it at that? πŸ˜‰

I started with Bausch & Lomb and am using Acuvue2 for about 1 yr now.. love ’em. I even slept in them one night and they didn’t kill my eyes (thank God)

I have a prescription so I just go with that.. I love Acuvue 2! Yeah, they take a bit longer to put on ‘cos they’re so floppy, but they feel so comfy. Been wearing lenses for about 7 yrs now so it’s all good! I like the sample idea, I wonder if it works in Sydney…. going to try πŸ˜€

Mine’s from my company though.. if I had health insurance paid for myself, I wouldn’t go for the highest plan either – ‘cos you end up paying more than you actually claim back!!

Does Australia have public healthcare or is it run by private insurance companies who are stingy as hell like the US? I got insurance but I have to pay $20 to see my regular doctor or gyno, $20 plus a referral from my regular doctor to see another doctor or specialist. I can pay $5 for meds but sometimes I end up paying like $35 or so. I get no vision care so I’m stuck paying $70 for a pair of glasses or more for lenses. I get free dental care though :o)
