I dont know after living in Mexico and moving from there to the USA, im under the impression that it cant be any better! The USA has so much land that can be purchased, guess it all depends on what type of person you are. I am a capitalist guru and so naturally I love the way of living here. I dream of actually living in Alaska, there is a lot of money to be made there and you can keep it yourself without the government taking it away!!!

I love the US, but depends which area – some of the States are so different they’re practically like different countries! What’s the tax rate in the USA? Ours is 48% πŸ™

Well… It depends.
It goes anywhere from 10% to 36% (at the federal level) the states can go from (0% to 15%ish) BUT then we have social security, medicare, sales taxes, gas taxes, property taxes (the list goes on).

Thats why I would love to live in Alaska they dont have any sales tax ot gas tax OR State income tax, which is my idea of a fair state.

I think it works out same as AU or a little lower.. my aim is to find a country with a great standard of living but low tax πŸ˜‰

Update (sort of)

The package hasn’t came back to me or the P.O., I’m sure if it would have arrived to chris you would have told me though. =/ I just hope its being held somewhere and not “lost” *sigh* I may be able to have it traced, or I can at least put in a “lost package” claim. I’m not sure how it works with global mail though. =/ Email Chris’s email addy again so I can hopefully do SOMETHING to get this package over there. (It may take a hand delivery, lol.)

Oh an off note I think the women at the post office despises me, I can imagine her hiding that package to spite me. =p

IRELAND? …how could THAT be? Ireland and the UK political INstability has caused far more tragedy than most of the other countries listed below it! especially SINCE the result of the tragedies have been from religious disputes. this STILL goes on today, and has been a problem long with terrorism before all this Iraq business popped up.

oh dear.

I think you’re referring to Northern Ireland, which is a part of Great Britain, in your comment. Ireland is a completely different matter.

I’ve never been to Ireland so I can’t say anything intelligently.. but I just never thought of it as a place to live, so it was a surprise! Makes me want to go there and check it out πŸ™‚

wow – am absolutely amazed Britain is only no. 29. Would have expected it to be far far higher – although they do take climate into account so that’s probably got something to do with it! And am disappointed (though not surprised) that US is so high up…pffft propaganda.
Tt’s cool about Australia and NZ being up there though – they so often get overlooked πŸ˜‰

Heheheheh good point about British weather πŸ˜‰ I know some people that used to live in the UK and they said they didn’t like living there!

Maybe erratic weather is an uppoint, otherwise why is Melbourne the world’s most livable city!!

well… Japan is pretty overpopulated in the big cities (and why would you want to live in one of the country towns anyway! be quite boring)

US is nice but there’s quite a lot of poverty and crime. And, well, since 9/11… of course its rating would be low! πŸ˜‰

Overpopulation is OK for me.. I’m used to living in a city πŸ™‚

And yeah, good point about 9/11, reckon that played a really big factor!

Hmmm interesting. I agree about Hong Kong.. crowdedness and overpopulated..

Surprised that England, France and Germany were ranked so ‘low’.. having just visited all 3 countries for the first time I really liked them.. except the air pollution in London was really bad.

Bit hard to generalise an entire country though.. compare living in Sydney to living in Alice Springs!

I think what we see in a country is just a tiny tiny snapshot of the big picture, which is why the stats seem to surprise most people! They take into account all sorts of variables that we just don’t really see in general, for example unemployment – we don’t really see that if we’re already employed, etc, etc.. does that make sense?

And yeah, like you said, I just think of “sydney” when I think of AU, not the ENTIRE country!

THey take into account the income, and I think it’s pretty high in HK, as is standard of living, etc.. maybe the rank via number of shops too, lol!!!

I’ve always wanted to live in Switzerland, I think it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Japan is okay, I used to live there for one and a half years before coming to Australia. Great country but very expensive.

Switzerland is really pretty (from photos and from friends’ accounts of it anyway, I’ve never been there).. but I don’t see it as the forefront of technology or a real pumping workforce, so I never really considered it a place to live.

DEFINITELY want to live in Japan. I love it there πŸ™‚

If they were taking into account the income and unemployment, that might account for the USA’s low ranking. As the economy has been rather poor in the last four years. And while it has picked up a bit in areas, there are still parts of the country still hurting and trying to recover (I live in one of those spots). Health I could see being a mild problem too. I’m kind of surprised that Canada didn’t do so well.

Yeah it’s a yearly thing, so the rankings would change I suppose. I’m still surprised though.. and as for the top 5 or so countries – never even gave them a thought, they just seemed far off and, well, kinda ‘unknown’. That’s not a good word to use, but hopefully you know what I mean! They’re just not countries that are always in the spotlight, etc..
