I can totally relate Beverly. When I read this entry, I was thinking how familiar it sounds LOL! My first 2 attempts on the driving test in Singapore, I got not so friendly testers. 1st one took out his socks and then airing his feet, then putting back on his feet, all these done while I was doing reverse parking. 2nd tester was very much like the one you described in this entry. I passed on 3rd attempt and the 3rd tester was a very nice guy!

Yeah I heard it’s REALLY hard to pass in SG, but now people are saying it’s just as hard in AU.. and just as expensive to learn :T Most people pass on the 2nd or 3rd round, so *fingers crossed*..

Let’s hope you’ll get a nice examiner this time around! I think having a car in AU is very essential as compared to SG. I’m too used to having a car though πŸ˜›

Can you try and appeal the decision? They can at least offer to re-test you for free.

My boyfriend had a similarly psychotic examiner when he first went for his test, and he was so furious with the experience that he went and kicked up a fuss, and they had to offer him a re-test at no cost.

Give it a try! ‘Cos $250 would be better spent on an Alannah Hill top or more Stila goodies. πŸ˜‰

I really do want to, but I mean, it’s just my word against his and I’m afraid it’ll look really petty πŸ™ You’re bf is so lucky to get a 2nd test free! What was the examiner like and what did he say when he complained?? My instructor’s pretty furious so I know he wants to lodge a complaint too, but ugh, I don’t know..

I got the Stila confections stuff from Adrienne so it should be here in about 1-2 weeks – I’m so excited! πŸ˜€

Anyone in this type of situation who makes a complaint will always be faced with the, ‘its his word against mine’. because of course there is no-one else in the car.
I’d go ahead and make the complaint. If something really terrible had happened how would you prove that either? so the powers that be, must take that into consideration.

Although, just beware, there is no regulation or rule saying that assesors must take you on a road that is this certain width for a 3 point turn, or that they must direct you to reverse park behind a perfectly parked car.

I know its a crappy situation. But remember an assessor should actually test you in difficult situations, not easy. Everyone ‘should’ be able to complete these tasks in near perfect conditions. Its a test to see if you can drive in irregular conditions and situations.

Where I come from there is only a handful of assesors and they ‘apparently’ have the highest amounts of failed licenses because they go out of their way to really test the drivers. Learner drivers hate them, Vic Roads loves them.

In Victoria I know that you can get booked by police for driving too slow, so I assume a very picky assessor could fail you for it. You know ‘you’re causing a problem on the road for not keeping the flow’. But 5km’s under is bollocks!

Who knows? But good luck for the next exam, and just be thankful you don’t come from my hometown!

Yeah.. it’s hard for me to complain because they can turn around and argue that there’s no specific rule about certain road widths, or number of curb-side stops, or whatever. But I do know in general all the examiners follow the same format. Plus I did the reverse parking and 3 point turn still perfectly, despite the difficult situations, so I was actually thinking I was definitely going to pass. Really didn’t think I”d get failed on driving 5k’s under the speed limit, of all things!

Didn’t realise VIC had such tests though *shudder*.. I’m scared of driving tests now. I purposely learned driving here because Singapore is notorious for being ultra hard to pass, and I thought they’d be a lot friendlier and nicer here! :X

I know females aren’t as good drivers as males, so I try really hard to be good.

Take it out now!! That is completely untrue, based both on actual statistics and personal experience. I think it’s a completely unfair and FALLICIOUS stereotype, which guys made up because they like to think they have a monopoly on anything technical or mechanical. Guy’s insurance is heaps higher than girls, they take way more stupid risks, and – to be honest – I don’t think I know *any* girls who are bad drivers, but I know heaps of guys. I cannot believe how arrogant guys are about this kind of stuff, and how readily we, as females, believe it to be true. WOMEN ARE ABSOLUTELY BETTER DRIVERS THAN MEN.

*humph*

*lol* I was actually thinking about you when I wrote that, ‘cos I think I said that to you before and you flipped out πŸ˜‰ I do reckon guys pick up driving faster than girls, but I think females are much more careful on the roads!

Hey Bev,

Think about it this way – you’ll just be picking up your license next time. I was nervous for my first test and didn’t really pay attention to the examiner when he asked me to turn. And I hit the kerb, but I’m way past that now. Had the same guy the second time round and he passed me. I think he knew it was just nerves or something. Sometimes they have a quota of people to fail, so you were just plain unlucky. It wasn’t quite as expensive as what you’re paying to retake it, and I only had 20 hours of driving including remediation before I took the tests, so I didn’t burn a huge hole in my pocket.

Minor point, but just a small correction – I don’t think female drivers are worse than males – most of them are, but I made it a point to drive well just cos’ my dad always said it. And I give my male friends who comment on how well I drive a really hard time just cos’ they’re being pigs.

Danae.

I hope you’re right, and that I won’t fail again the next time! 65 practise hours are ridiculous, most people only need about 20 and the min now is 50, but I had to do 65 because I stopped for 3 months and basically forgot everything :X

I do think that guys are just naturally better at picking up driving, but being better doesn’t mean they’re safer – I reckon most young guys are way more dangerous drivers than young females, which i guess is why their insurance is sky high.

Good luck for next time Bev! Dont let that crabby arse bring you down!

I gave up my driving lessons after i worked out i had had 15 1 & 1/2 hr lessons and hadnt actually been taught anything other than driving straight and turning in the road, I hadnt even been taken onto a major road!

But every time i asked “what am i doing wrong” or “how do you do such-and-such” he would just tell me I was one of his best students!!!! Obviously trying to get my regular money for as long as possible. I say the whole driving lesson and test thing is a bit of a scam really. If you are A* at driving they sometimes fail you and if you are cra* they sometimes still pass you!

Hehe “crabby arse”.. I love that πŸ˜‰

Your driving lessons sound terrible – what a scammer!! My instructor’s pretty good though, he tells me when I don’t need extra lessons and that I’m just wasting my $$ on him ‘cos I’m ready for the test πŸ˜‰ Maybe the examiner just wanted me to bribe him – I’ve heard stories of people bribing examiners just to pass the test :X

I’m almost 22, I’ve taken the road test twice since I was 17. And I’ve yet to pass. More for lack of knowledge on how to maneuver the vehicle I test in than lack of driving knowledge (I’ve never tested in the same car I’ve practiced in). But you have way more hours of instruction than I ever received lol Good luck, Beverly ^^

Wow, why do you take the tests so far apart? Won’t you forget how to drive in the meantime? My test retake has to be a minimum of 2 weeks away, which is VERY annoying because it means i need a driving lesson in between just to keep my memory and skills fresh!

Oh Bev! I feel so bad for you. That examiner is really a nutcase! Can’t you do an appeal or something? Surely, a great injustice has been done here!

Yeah, it’s pretty crap πŸ™ I can’t really complain ‘cos he can say he tested exactly as per the instructions he was given and I can’t prove otherwise πŸ™ I just pray that I won’t get him the second time!!

I told my hb your case and he said he was asked to do the same thing (reverse park behind a badly parked car) when he was doing his test in Sydney years ago. His instructor had taught him to say no because sometimes the examiners just want to see if you know what’s wrong and what’s not. So when he was asked to park behind a badly parked car after turning, he said no and gave the reason that it was too dangerous etc etc. Maybe that’s what you should’ve done?

I dunno..sounds like some examiners actually test you on what you shouldn’t do, as opposed to what you should do?

Oooo… but my instructor said that in the test, they only ask you to park behind a ‘nice’ car, not a badly parked one! πŸ™ He was really surprised at what I was asked to do, and I mean, I don’t really argue with the examiner so I just listened ;( In the handbook that you read before the test, they never mentioned that you can dispute what the examiner says! grrrr… It’s just painful because it’s so much money wasted πŸ™

Ya I feel the pain…A$3500 is A LOT OF MONEY! I only paid about RM450 for my lessons and test!

Btw, my SIL came back from Sydney today and she brought home two dozes of KK donuts. They are so YUMMY!!! Now I know what you keep raving about them! πŸ˜‰

Oh well, I hope your driving test turns out better the second time πŸ™‚ It’s too bad there’s always nutcase driving instructors like him. It’s completely unnerving…

*hugz*

Driving tests are like that. A lot depends on the instructor’s mood, & since no one else is in the car, it’s ur word against his. Anywayz, all the bestfor ur next test. Hmm.. maybe try to do a little background check on the tester. haha.. had a friend who passed coz the tester was in a hurry to go back coz his wife was abt to deliver. I think that’s the most amusing driving test story I’ve heard so far. That’s in SG tho.

Yeah, you’re right about the “your word against his” thing, that’s why I don’t want to complain or anything. Hopefully I”ll get a nice one, or one that’s about to have a baby too *lol*!!! But at least he quickly passed and not quickly failed your friend πŸ˜›
