“If MS can become monolopy of the IT industry, then quite obviously they managed to win over customers to become where they are. “

In reality they didn’t “win” any customers over…the just made sure that the customers had no other choice but to use MS products by gridlocking markets….There are alternatives…and you will find that many “smart” people(Some of which who have “BEEN” to Uni)….do choose these alternatives…the rest…just don’t know any better…a sad sad world we live in…

So you’re saying when MS was a budding company, they MADE customers buy their products? So why can’t *every* start-up company out there also do the same? The answer is because it’s the CONSUMER’S choice that makes a company the way it is. A global corporation doesn’t just suddenly appear magically, it’s years of work that takes it to where it is, as well as the fact that the consumers are constantly buying the products to make it the way it is.

If you want to argue, argue with firm facts and figures. Because I, too, used to be a mis-informed consumer that thought MS was just a big corporation that took money. But now that I’m in it and doing the work I do, I’ve seen the reports and the way things are done, and now I know better.

“I’ve already BEEN at Uni”

Lol

That makes you sooooo much smarter than the rest of us then!

Geez, do you really think so? That’s nice, but I don’t think having already been at uni makes one smarter. But I *do* think that assuming someone doesn’t understand what a word means is silly and nonsensical.

Hey Bev, Im glad u like yr job! Not everyone likes the coporate world (well, at least not me but it could be due to my sucky jobs) and not everyone enjoys what they are doing…

So if you find working in Microsoft enjoyable, happy and satisfying/fufiling, then congrats! =)

I never saw myself working in the corporate field when I was young.. always wanted to work for myself so I wouldn’t have a boss πŸ˜› But I do like it now, it’s amazing what you learn and I learnt a lot of stuff that I never knew about before – plus it’s so much more relevant than what you learn at Uni (which I think is useless) πŸ˜‰ My dream job is still to start a cosmetics line though! πŸ˜›

Hahhaa.. u can always start yr own cosmetic line once you’ve saved enough money. And I think its a very possible and feasible dream with enough money and the right expertise! =)

Just pray that u won’t be bogged down by any nasty things that might come yr way next time (since we are all working, you know that we can’t avoid such stuff)…

U never know, maybe there’ll be another colleague who admires and envy you and start to back-stab you for nothing! But then again… Im quite cynical lah.. =P

It costs SO much to start a line though πŸ™ And I don’t have ANY expertise in the industry, which really sucks! Ahh.. my parents already warned me about people in the work place that will try and backstab and do whatever they can to make sure you don’t succeed, so at least I’m already expecting it, but hopefully everyone will be nice and see me as someone nice and not a threat πŸ™‚

hahaha… not everyone will see you as an ally, some will see you as enemy I guess.. envy is a bad thing. =P

Anyway, all the best for yr new job! =)

I think I can guess what the interview questions were πŸ˜‰

(a) Do you love Microsoft?
(b) Do you worship Bill Gates?
(c) Do you promise to love Microsoft and worship Bill Gates forever?

*lol* then I wouldn’t have passed.. ‘cos I used to be the ill-informed consumer that assumed that Microsoft was a greedy corporation that didn’t care about the customers, until I started work and saw the facts and figures. So it’s a GOOD thing they didn’t ask me that πŸ˜‰

Well I don’t use Windows and the only MS product I use is IE. Every time a big virus goes around the world I’m safe in the knowledge that I don’t have it!

I don’t care if they are or aren’t nice to their customers, do or don’t do charity work.. basically it comes down to the fact that they have so much power and (what?) 90? percent of the world’s computer users use that operating system… let’s just all be sheep and follow the crowd, because Microsoft wants us to.

Heh, I actually prefer Mozilla to IE – I have about 10 windows open at any one time so IE really chews on the RAM.

Btw, you can’t blame Microsoft for being such a powerful and rich company. It’s the consumers that made them that way. Do you honestly think people decided to buy the software simply because “Microsoft wants us to”? They buy it because the software serves a purpose, and they want it. People DON’T buy things because a company “wants” them to. So obviously MS would be doing *something* right to have this kind of sales and effect on the IT industry. If you want to point fingers and accuse, then accuse the common consumers for MAKING the company as big as it is now.

MS is a monopoly, if you understand what the term means. Whenever they come across someone who is even remotely a threat, they buy them out because they can afford to (look at Zoo Tycoon). What can these little companies do – they obviously don’t have as much money as Bill Gates can offer them, they have no choice but to sell out or go out of business. If BG was as charitable as you say he was, he wouldn’t be offering to buy out all these smaller companies that actually do decent work.

If you want to argue that, then ask yourself HOW the company became as rich as it is. If they never cared about their customers, HOW did they manage to become a worldwide corporation to which no product compares to in terms of usage and sales?

To get to where they are, obviously they did something right. Facts show that 70% of customers buy because of the way the “feel” about the product, because of intangible reasons (ie. not price, quality, etc). If MS can become monolopy of the IT industry, then quite obviously they managed to win over customers to become where they are.

on a side note, don’t try and patronise me by “if you understand what the term means”. It’s pitiful and useless. Think about it – you’re at Monash and still at Uni and I’ve already BEEN at Uni. So what makes you think you know more silly little words than I do? If you want to argue, argue with logic and facts – trying to belittle someone is laughable and reflects embarassingly on yourself.

YOU GO BEV!

it’s really sad to see some people being so bitter and jealous of your success. but at the end of the day you are the one with a job thousands of people dream of and a life that makes people envious. you’ll learn that through life, there will always be the bitter ones that will try and pull you down to their level and make you feel bad about yourself, but just remember that you are better than them and where you are in life right now is a testament to that!

I’m not a big user of MS software, it crashes for me but doesn’t for the rest of my family! But I agree with the person above about people being envious of your success. It’s human nature to be bitter when someone so young has an opportunity like this and only natural to try and bring that person down a little so they don’t seem so happy. Chin up Beverly, you got yourself to the incredible position where you are now and you did it singlehandedly. Leave others to fester in jealousy while you rise above them and shine.

-d

Just FYI I never said that they didn’t care about their customers, I simply pointed out that the reason they have such high sales is because they have a monopoly — people have nowhere else to go.

And I have also “already BEEN at Uni” and graduated with a computer science degree two years ago – I am back to do my masters after two years of working because I got sick of computer science :), how silly of you to assume that just because I’m still at uni, I have not already “BEEN”. In fact I’m pretty sure I know more silly little words than you do already having a degree and two years of work experience under my belt, and being halfway through my masters.

And finally I am not envious or jealous of your success and also job at Microsoft, in fact I am quite happy for you, you earnt it, you wanted it and you deserve it, I just don’t think that people who are anti-microsoft deserve to be booed because they have their reasons, you love Microsoft that’s great but really you shouldn’t “boo” those who don’t, and I feel that your Micro-praise comments are a bit naive and off-key.

On a end note, it’s not you that makes me mad, it’s Microsoft, their operating systems which don’t work and the fact that my computer is screwed and requires reformatting every 6 months regardless of what version of windows I am using, your “Microsoft is oh_so_wonderful” really gets to me as I’m sure it does other people, but I am happy for you and your new job, it’s great that you love it so much, it’s pretty hard to come by a job that you love as much as you love yours, you’re pretty lucky (or blessed should I say), and I wish you all the success in the future :).

Firstly, thanks for being honestly and logical. I mainly get irate when people blab crap and try and make me feel like I’m anything but lucky, so I do appreciate it if people want to voice their opinion but are mature about it. People will ALWAYS have different views and I think it’s healthy to have a good debate, but trying to belittle someone is a completely different ball park.

Re: Uni. The reason I said I’ve already finished Uni was the original comment saying I didn’t understand what “monopoly” was. My point was that it’s absurd when I’ve already finished Uni and I obviously have SOME sort of English language comprehension. I think it’s silly and irrelevant to say “if you understand what that means”.

Microsoft knows fully well they have monopoly. I think that’s the aim of every company – to have great sales and be the foremost in their field, so I’m not going to blame them for it. What my original comment was that they care about their customers – if they didn’t, they wouldn’t even become a big company – they would remain a small, useless one. Plus, our entire workshop was formulated for us to discuss HOW to make our customers happier – so are you saying what I did on Thurs was a complete illusion? Because I put forth a whole bunch of ideas on what MS can do to improve customer connections – are you saying that I was completely fake and was just out to make money? ‘Cos I don’t get that money at all, Bill Gates does, I still get my standard wage. I just don’t like people telling me what I do is a complete illusion and I’m there for nothing.

At at the bottom of it all, if MS cared about *themselves* only, what the hell do you think I’m doing in the company? Cos I’m just BRILLIANT and they need me? Hahaha. I’m nothing compared to what they COULD get for themselves, but they chose me because they wanted to give me an opportunity – and to me, that’s caring about the consumer.

Personally, I hate some MS products too. Windows ME was gawd awful and IE simply hates me. I can pick out numerous faults and bugs that I would fix – but I guess it’s hard to make things perfect, and while I’m there, I can do the best I can because it’s also part of my job. But my point is that they DO try to make everyone happy – or the whole company would fold-over and no one would want to work for them. And it’s really opened my eyes to both the IT and corporate world. I just never thought I would be where I am and i honestly am amazed that, yes, a monopolising and self-centered company.. albeit a darn rich one, would choose ME, of all people, to work for them! That alone makes them amazing to me and now that I’ve seen how they tick, I AM impressed with the fact that they dedicate divisions and thousands of staff to make sure consumers are happy.

*steps off soap box*

Indeed Bill Gates does have more money than most other person, and I remember reading somewhere that the reason he donates so much money to charity is because he doesn’t want to leave it to his kids.

If their products actually worked, and worms weren’t so easily penetrated through Microsoft Windows, perhaps there would be less anti-Microsoft sites out there ;).

I personally think one should be wary about what they read in the media.. they tend to blow wins out of proportion, and risks as well. I doubt any father wouldn’t give any money to his children. He’s given a ton of money to charities but believe me, he has squillions of it left, so he probably meant he doesn’t want to give ALL of it to his kids.

At the end of the day, no product compares to MS products, and that can’t be argued because all you need to look at his the brand value, company turnover, and the percentage of people using the products as opposed to any other brand. So I still stand by that Microsoft is one of the best companies out there because they MUST be doing something right πŸ˜‰

Hhahaahah Microsoft cares about thier customers

Hhahahahaahahahah…their customers MONEY maybe..

Also you may or may not be aware that Bill Gates recently donated a few million to buy vacines for dieseases such as aids malaria and so forth for the people of Africa.
But he and Microsoft are avid supporters of the Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights rules of the World Trade Organization which basically protects Microsofts products…and also stops African Countries from being able to purchase medicine and vacines at cheap prices….

Yeah…he’s such a nice guy that Bill Gates…and Microsoft..what a loooooooooooovely caring company…not to mention the high quality software they make at Oh so affordable prices!

Yay Microsoft!

As a corporation, do you think they (or ANY business for that matter) can *honestly* say they don’t care about their customers’ money? I think it’s useless to insist and hope for a company to NOT care about money, at the end of the day. I also don’t think it’s wise to make really strong decisions without a lot of research and having a full idea of exactly what the company is about and what they do, y’know? For example, our department supports charities (our division actually held 2500 charity events last financial year, and all of the millions that were made went direct to charity) – and they didn’t just throw over a check and leave it at that, like every other company does. They donated money AND spent time making/folding the little bandanas and whatever that were to be sold, and dedicated something that’s a lot more meaningful and worthwile than money – time and effort.

Yeah it was really interesting ‘cos I’m always so IT-ish that I’m kind of oblivious to the marketing aspect.. and you ALWAYS need to know some kind of marketing or you won’t even know what you’re producing πŸ˜›

Yeah, but having the most money doesn’t come with any sort of agreement that you MUST give it away. Personally, if I had tons of money I’d be really tempted to keep it all for myself or just give a litte bit away πŸ˜‰

So a big BOOOOO to you if you’re anti-Microsoft!! ‘Cos the compay really does care about customers, the entire workshop was to make sure that we do.

have you thought about *why* that is though?

Of course, I’m not stupid and blind you know. ANY company wants sales, that’s the bottom line. But in order to GET those sales, they know that a customer connection or relationship is the key. And I think it shows integrity and care that they recognise these issues and want to play an active part in it – it shows a knowledge of the business and how to get it to best suit you AND the customer.

Yeah of course they do – where they stand as a global corporation attests to that. If they didnt’ care about the customers and only about themselves, they wouldn’t be the biggest IT company and one of the largest companies in the world.. because consumers would take their business elsewhere if they didn’t feel they were properly taken care of.

wooot!

Wow Beverly! Sounds like you’re having a blast πŸ™‚
That is such an uber-cool job, I can really see you doing great thing for the site, and the company! Good luck with it all πŸ™‚

Hi! I’ve been reading your journal for quite a while.
And I just want to congratulate you for getting a great job with the Microsoft company! I hope everything will go on smoothly for you there!! πŸ˜‰

Thanks! It’s going smoothly so far, but I start my first full-time day at headquarters tomorrow so I’m excited to see how that goes πŸ™‚
