US$40-45 is on track if you go to college in my town anyway. I personally spend anything from $35-$50 depending on whether I get stuff like meat, fresh produce, laundry items and meds/health supplies. My friend spent $70 this week and felt bad but she is a grocery store virgin and that’s ok πŸ˜€

Just thought I’ll let you know that I spend approx AUD$30 a week on groceries(I’m a sucker for muesli bars, consuming an ave of 1 a day; fruits – whatever’s on sale, usually apples cos they’re only $2+ for 1.5kg; chicken fillet; oh yea, n a bit of junk food here n there…seems irresistable for every international student eh?;)
yea, and I thought I was spending a lot?! Hmmm…*contemplative*

haha, oh yea, but I’m not in Syd, I’m in Melbourne so I guess that’s why it may be a bit cheaper…

Gak! How do you spend that little? That’s really impressive.. how much is a 500g of raw chicken breast for you? Here it’s about AU$8 if I remember correctly..

I think that is OK. But if u wanna to cut ur budget a bit more, try the wet market where the local goes or may be go for non-branded. These will help u to bring down 20%

No wet markets around me unfortunately πŸ™ We do have Franklins though, which is a cheap supermarket.. but I found that some of the stuff is actually more expensive than ‘normal’ supermarkets!

I probably spend about $25/week on groceries. I rarely buy anything that is not on sale and I am a huge coupon clipper πŸ™‚ However, I don’t have the healthiest diet, so I don’t buy fresh fruit & veggies, which can add up to a lot.

Yikes! I feel like such a spendthrift now :T And I don’t go around buying chocolates and random stuff like that too! I do buy fruit and veg now though.. trying to learn to include that kinda stuff in my diet. It only works out to about $5-7/week though so it’s not *that* much!

Is food more expensive over there? Do you buy what’s on sale?

Side note:
My roommate is in Australia right now for a teacher conference:) She’s in Sydney I believe. From her e-mail’s it sounds like she is having a good time πŸ™‚

Yeah I try to get whatever’s on sale, it changes every week which is good! Heh glad your roommate’s having a good time.. the weather isn’t too bad atm, we’re in a bit of a rainy spell this week though!

thats not a lot. my sis and i probably spend around US$100 a week at the supermart. and thats just buying things like milk, juice, bread, eggs, some fruits plus lots of junk food and snacks. no vegetables or meat etc coz we cant be bothered to cook nowadays. we eat out or get takeaway a lot so i think i actually spend quite a lot of money on food each month.

If we head to those hypermarkets (like Asda) or if we’re buying groceries from chinese supermarkets, the bill can go up to as high as 80USD and it’ll probably last me only 1 – 1.5 weeks? If you’re talking about normal places like Tesco etc, then it’s around 40-45 USD/wk. Funny how I buy more at cheaper places, everything sounds too cheap so in the end, I end up getting more πŸ™‚

Wow, are Chinese supermarkets just expensive or something? Chris and I actually were planning to go to one next weekend so we can cook some ‘real’ Asian food.. the stuff that they have in grocery shops here are western-style, so you get mild curries and they just taste different to the authentic stuff!

Yea, that’s why we’re always doing our grocery shopping at chinese supermarkets. For eg., their curry here is made to taste which will suit the apetites of English people here. Their version of “very spicy” is my “non-spicy” and I don’t even go near chillies! Yuck! And don’t get me started with their sweet and sour pork πŸ˜› Anyway, I guess it is because they import most of the stuff from Hong Kong, S’pore and M’sia so that’s why they’re slightly more expensive.

i don’t keep track … but i’d estimate $50 per week? and that’s AUD too. we don’t buy a lot of snacks, my brother and i.

snack bars are bad.. :p

I don’t buy hings though, not yet, but I would be curious to see the answers to this, because I want to move out and want to see how poor I’m gonna get!

I used to buy bags of chips and chocolates.. but now I buy muesli bars so that’s ok right?! They’re choc chip ones though, I can’t stomach those yoghurt/fruit ones, blech.

Hey Bev!

That sounds about right. πŸ™‚ It’s about 200 per month. USD of course. πŸ™‚ For me, probably more because I pick up everything that looks yummy @ the stoer. LOL.

Hahha I do that too! But I find that if I eat before shopping, then I buy less ‘cos I’m not hungry and going “ooooo I’d love to eat that!” at every item I see πŸ˜‰
