i had to do a four-hour chem lab on september eleventh. psychology/english were the only cancelled classes at my california college, and only so they could turn the lecture halls into television-watching rooms. faculty baked sandwiches, wheat and white, and the non-science/non-mathematics students ate them while updating themselves with the news.

tomorrow, “national prayer day” as declared by our president, i have class at noon, when we’re supposed to say a prayer. it’s my japanese class. hehe, kinda funny. i duno what to expect.

i’m sorry it’s hitting you hard where you are, too.

I always said I would never have childern..they aren’t my thing. But know I KNOW that I will never ever have children. In my right mind I could not bring life into a world so so so fucked up.

I love kids… they’re my kinda thing πŸ˜€ But you’re right, realising how fragile our world is (and how shit humans can be) kind of deters you from wanting to bring an innocent being into this world. We’re a bloody self-destructive species. Go us.

Interesting.

America: The Good Neighbor

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his Trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

“This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

? Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

? When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

? When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

? The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

? I’d like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?

? If so, why don’t they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon – not once, but several times – and safely home again.

? You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

? When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody Loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

? I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don’t think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I’m one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those.”

Aww, you guys are lucky! I have a HUUUGE geology test Friday, and the stupid prof wouldn’t give an extension, even though the class begged him to. He wouldn’t be swayed, even after we told him that we’d had one whole day of study time taken away, and frankly, no one was in the mood for rocks.

That’s not cool πŸ™ I think most schools/unis in the US should take it into consideration and give extensions and special exemptions… after all, they’re doing it HERE!
All my asignments were due last week though, so I don’t get affected at all – but all of those that got extensions are happy as punch.

Wow.. I can’t believe your University is giving all kinds of extensions on assignments. No offense, I can sort of understand your concern. But at the University my boyfriend attends, it’s business at usual – they are sticking to their original syllabus, with all assignments due on time – and this is in the U.S., where we have just been rocked by tragedy!! They are giving consideration for those affected by the tragedies who need to miss classes, but other than that, it’s class and assignments as usual. You’d think if anywhere should be concerned and giving people a break, it would be U.S. universities..

No kidding!! I was really surprised too… because to be honest – people here in Australia aren’t directly affected by it. I heard that some unis/schools in the US have shut down for a few days, but not all. That’s why I was pretty surprised to hear everyone get huge extensions to assignments and special exemptions from exams – and this isn’t just specific people that had relatives in NY either, this is everyone.
But no one’s complaining – they’re pretty overjoyed they got extensions. Figures!

No kidding.. the only reason my classes got cancelled on Tuesday is because our school is right next to Procter & Gamble, which is a few blocks from GE Aircraft warehouse. So if the terrorists were to continue attacking, we’d be at the top of the list.

No offense but other countries have NO idea what we are going through. No idea at all. I see no reason why canadian schools should have the rest of the week off, or why you guys down there should have extensions. If US citizens can go on with their days.. living the day in fear, I think you can as well.
